“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel but on a candlestick; and it gives light to all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16
Christian, YOU are the light of the world. Jesus tells you that in his sermon on the mount. Notice he does not say that He is the light of the world (though He is), rather He gives that title to you and to me. We are the light! And God wants you and me to know that. He wants us to embrace that truth, claim it, and be it. YOU are the light of the world.
Think for a moment of the effects light has on its surroundings. The next chance you get, position yourself in a fully darkened room next to a light switch or lamp. Take a moment (before turning on the light) to gaze around the room and consider what you can or rather cannot see. Are you blinded to your surroundings? Now switch on the light. What do you see now?! Everything?!Believer, just as the light you switched on enables you to see clearly everything around you, you have the light of Christ living within you that enables you to see everything that is true and righteous and holy. You can see the Creator of the world for who He truly is! With the light you have been given, you can know and relate with the Christ whom He sent! And just as God has given you eyes to see, He also gives you His light so that you would help others to see. Will you be that light? Will you allow others to see clearly what you see by being the light of Christ today?
Let your light so shine before men. Do good works – help a friend, bless someone financially, extend God’s mercy and grace, pray with another person for their benefit – and do it all in Jesus name.
When you do that – when you shine the light of Christ onto the world and people around you, you will enable others to see. And as a result of your light, they will glorify your Father which is in heaven. And perhaps, God willing, they will receive the same light you received and shine it onto another.
